Finding Your “purpose” is Finding Your HAPPINESS

Reviewing the newly-released book “The Purpose Code” from Dr. Jordan Grumet.

Have you ever felt like there must be more to life? Like you’re going through the motions but not truly living with purpose? You’re not alone. Many people struggle with this feeling of emptiness, constantly searching for that grand goal that will bring them happiness.

But what if I told you that purpose isn’t some far-off destination? What if it’s actually the little things you do each day? This is the core message of Dr. Jordan Grumet’s book, The Purpose Code: How to Unlock Your Meaning, Maximize Happiness and Leave a Lasting Legacy.

In this video I’m diving into Dr. Grumet’s concept of “little p purpose” and how it can transform your life.

Big P Purpose vs. Little P Purpose

Dr. Grumet challenges the traditional view of purpose, which he calls “big P Purpose” This is the grand vision, the lofty goal we chase after – winning the Super Bowl, becoming a CEO, achieving ultimate fame. The problem with “Purpose” is that it’s often out of reach for most people. It’s all-or-nothing, and failure to achieve it can lead to immense disappointment.

On the other hand, “little p purpose” is about the everyday things that bring you joy and fulfillment. It’s about the process, the journey, the small wins that accumulate over time. It can be spending quality time with loved ones, helping others, learning a new skill, or simply getting better at something you already enjoy, like playing pickleball (yes, Doc G even uses pickleball as an example!).

Why “purpose” Matters

“purpose” is the key to unlocking happiness and living a fulfilling life. Here’s why:

  • Attainable: “purpose” is within reach for everyone. You don’t need special skills or qualifications to pursue it.
  • Incremental Gains: It’s about making small improvements each day, which leads to a sense of accomplishment and progress.
  • Sustainable: “purpose” activities are enjoyable, so you’re more likely to stick with them in the long run.
  • Meaningful: When you engage in activities that align with your values and interests, you experience a deeper sense of meaning in life.

Finding Your “purpose”

So, how do you find your “purpose”? Here are a few tips:

  • Life Review: Doc G recommends a life review exercise, where you reflect on your past accomplishments, regrets, and goals. This can help you identify what truly matters to you.
  • Consider What’s Meaningful: Make a list of things that bring meaning to your life. What are your values? What kind of impact do you want to make?
  • Identify Activities You Enjoy: What are you naturally good at? What hobbies or activities bring you joy?
  • Start Small: Don’t try to overhaul your life overnight. Start by incorporating small, purposeful activities into your daily routine.

“purpose” and Your Financial Journey

Finding your “purpose” can also impact your financial journey. When you’re living a life filled with meaning, you’re more likely to make sound financial decisions that align with your values. You may be more motivated to save for experiences that bring you joy, rather than just chasing material possessions.

Living a Life with Purpose

Remember, purpose isn’t something you find – it’s something you create. By focusing on your “purpose”, you can unlock a life filled with happiness, fulfillment, and a positive impact on the world around you.
